                  BWy Emily Devon.  hile there are many  things out of our control,  for the new back-to-  school season, Retail World shines a light on what we can control (or at least try to control when it comes to children): what we consume. One of the goals now is to make sure all our immunities are in tip-top shape, including those of the little ones, which means packing healthy school lunches and helping to ensure they lead a nutrient-filled life. When it comes to what snacks to pack in the lunch box, it’s crucial to consider what nutrients are packed into those snacks. Retail World spoke with Pharmacist Sylvia Vyoung on what will strengthen people’s immunities. “Eating a balanced healthy diet and drinking plenty of water,” she said, adding that fruit and vegetables are packed with essential vitamins such as vitamin D, minerals such as selenium and zinc, and antioxidants such as vitamin C, beta-carotenes and vitamin E that can boost the immune system. “A high-fat diet is associated with impairing white blood cell function, as well as altering the gut microbiomes that aids in immunity,” she said. Another key factor to look for when packing lunch boxes is probiotics, which Ms Vyoung says help reduce the occurrence of common colds and enhance immune system functions. A beverage with benefits Australian Pure Fruits National Merchandise Manager Roger Gentile says there’s no stopping the health trend. “Many of the distributors delivering to schools have had to change products they’ve previously been supplying,” he said, citing a strong push for healthier beverages to be provided.
