BUSINESS THROUGH INNOVATION COVID-19 RESPONSE 2021 33 sport or head somewhere quiet to get away from it all, pressure has built up, compounded by financial hardship and even partner redundancy for some. According to McKinsey’s recent insight article ‘Overcoming pandemic fatigue: How to re-energise organisations for the long run’, a worrying mental health picture is emerging. People are admitting to feeling “anxious, overwhelmed and lonely” or “completely burned out”, or saying, “I’m not sure how much longer I can keep going like this”. Microsoft’s recent survey across the Asia Pacific region found 64 per cent of workers interviewed are reporting symptoms of burnout, while a WHO study in European countries found the number of surveyed workers rating their mental health as ‘very poor’ was more than three times higher than before the pandemic struck – with mental-health issues still considered likely to rise. Take five The take-five process involves exploring five topics, each with an objective and opportunity for discussion, contribution and agreement. It’s best carried out offsite where there are no interruptions and you can make the most of the opportunity. The topics are: • Remember. • Restore. • Release. • Recover. • Refocus. Remember successes Having come through so much, the team’s successes and highlights can be forgotten. There’ll be moments of genius, breakthroughs, positive outcomes and praise- deserving actions to be remembered and enjoyed, while the lessons and actions that led to those successes become part of the team’s toolkit. Restoring relationships Disagreements will have occurred, perhaps harsh words spoken, and people sometimes will have just found it difficult to work together. There may also be some who never met due to split shifts. Through constructive team building activities, allowing space for open dialogue while encouraging a willingness to put those differences aside, relationships can soon be restored. Releasing stress Take the team for a meal, an evening out or a short trip to a pleasant location so you can truly switch off and relax. Recovering energy Make sure everyone takes some holiday, even if only a day or two. Refocusing on a purpose Finally, gather the team together and share your vision and passion for the next goals and objectives. Involve everyone by giving small areas of responsibility, then step back and trust them, only stepping in if needed. Remember, teams are at their best when their relationships, roles and purpose are clear. With those in place, there’s buy-in, commitment and belief as you focus on the next adventure.
